South Mountain Shelter Medical Coordinator

Position Overview

Responsible for the medical care and monitoring of the health and welfare of animals under the direction of staff veterinarians in a shelter environment. Assists the veterinarians in all aspects of the South Mountain Shelter Medical Team including surgery, radiology, dentistry, laboratory diagnostics, client education, clinic asepsis, fluid therapy and the administration of prescribed medications. As a coordinator, you will be responsible for the flow and technicians within the South Mountain Shelter team.

Essential Functions

  • Day-to-day support of tech staff and operations.
  • Train and assist in supervising staff, externs, and volunteers.
  • Assist the Veterinary Technicians/Assistants/etc., in their performance of a variety of technical duties.
  • Assist in overseeing control drug logs and verifying all logs are filled out accurately.
  • Help maintain the staff schedule as needed.
  • Assist in ensuring technicians are meeting goals.
  • Ensure pets are moving through the shelter in a timely fashion.
  • Assist staff veterinarians with exams, procedures, surgeries, and other duties assigned.
  • Perform emergency procedures as instructed by staff veterinarians.
  • Collect samples and perform lab tests, implant microchips and administer any necessary vaccines.
  • Help verify the medical adaptability and determine the best disposition for the animals.
  • Assist in training staff members in medical procedures.
  • Perform x-rays and demonstrate an understanding of radiation safety procedures.
  • Assist in all areas of surgery.
  • Complete and maintain all records in our database.
  • Clean and prepare all instruments for packing and autoclaving.
  • Assist in routine cleaning of the hospital, including cleaning and disinfecting kennels after animals are released.
  • Fill veterinarian prescriptions and provide instructions for administration.
  • Perform and assist in euthanasia following departmental procedures.
  • Possibly testify in court regarding field investigations.
  • Demonstrate a professional and positive demeanor at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications / Licenses:

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Completion of a veterinary technician program preferred

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in a veterinary hospital or shelter medicine.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in phlebotomy, immunology, parasitology, endocrinology, pharmacology and perform safe and humane animal handling.
  • Demonstrate a proficiency in anesthesiology

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Language - Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bilingual skills helpful.

Mathematical - Basic mathematical skills.

Technical - Computer proficiency required.

Other:

Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation required.

There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
