Animal Intake Behavior Specialist

Position Overview

Do you have a passion for working with pets and people? In Animal Assistance, we strive to provide an excellent experience every time. An Animal Intake Behavior Specialist will assist with the intake of owned and stray animals by reviewing available information in advance of appointments, speaking directly with owners, adopters, and staff regarding a pet's behavior and assisting with behavior evaluations to determine suitability for adoption. Additionally, you will educate pet owners and provide surrender prevention resources when possible and assist with end-of-life services when needed. As part of the Animal Assistance Team, you will work very closely with the Medical, Behavior, and Field Operations teams and be a key AHS storyteller by sharing our mission and values with the public.

Day in the Life of an Animal Intake Specialist:

  • Provide an excellent experience every time to internal & external customers in a timely and courteous, professional manner.
  • Review animal profiles for upcoming appointments to determine suitability for adoption.
  • Complete follow up calls to customers as needed to assist in determining suitability for adoption.
  • Perform initial behavior evaluations and provide detailed, objective descriptions of the behavior
  • Speak directly and professionally with owners, finders, and staff in regards to the pet's behavior and suitability for adoption through AHS.
  • With the goal of keeping behavior animals at a healthy capacity, control the flow of animals through collaboration with the Behavior and Capacity and Flow Departments.
  • Relay information from pet owners and finders to the Veterinarian on duty or Trauma Tech as needed.
  • Enter all medical and behavior notes into our animal database (Chameleon).
  • Collect Animal Assistance fees and solicit donations.
  • Answer incoming calls and emails in a professional and compassionate tone.
  • Assist with end-of-life and aftercare services as needed.
  • Demonstrate excellent time management skills and the ability to maintain minimum efficiencies as set forth for the position/duty.
  • Keep knowledge current on behavior, enrichment and basic training for any species housed by AHS.
  • Keep a positive, empathetic tone when the outcome of a pet is not a positive one.
  • Collaborate with the Pet Resource Center team on surrender prevention and customer experience efforts.
  • Provide resources for rehoming during surrender appointments and at the front desk for walk-ins.
  • Restock and clean Animal Assistance lobby, exam rooms, and internal/external surrounding areas.
  • Maintain equipment used in assessments.
  • Tell our story! Act as a voice for AHS and relay our mission and vision during checkout.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Must love working with pets and people.
  • Spanish bilingual preferred.
  • Minimum one-year providing exemplary customer service.
  • Excellent interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills required.
  • Understanding how animals learn through operant and classical conditioning, and the ability to relay this to pet owners using common language.
  • Understand and be able to interpret canine and feline body language.
  • Must be able to operate in a fast-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Must be able to maintain accurate records. Chameleon experience a plus!
  • CPDT-KA or comparable certification, or coursework in animal behavior
  • Minimum of two years' experience performing behavior evaluations on canines, modifying fearful behavior in canines and modifying food aggression with people in canines preferred. Experience with basic training of canines a plus.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working in a shelter, preferably in a behavior or intake department

Education / Certifications / Licenses:

  • High school diploma/GED


Animal shelter, medical facility, human shelter, non-profit sector, customer service, sales, animal welfare

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Spanish preferred.

Mathematical - Understanding of cash handling operations required.

Technical - Data entry.


Regular attendance, punctuality and access to reliable transportation are required.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. There may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air-conditioned and heated office environment. This position requires continuous standing, walking and kneeling, reaching, stooping and bending. This person must be able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
